The colors and materials, the shapes and positions – these are all a reflection of you, and the choices you make will shape your canvas. And just like the art-world, the world of interior design is quite objective – everybody has different tastes, appreciations, styles. My advice is not to be afraid of having furniture pieces from different styles and backgrounds; as long as they are meaningful, symbolic, luminous, and harmonious, it isn’t hard to create a work of art you’ve always dreamed of.

Remember to try and always look at the “big picture” of the room as a whole; the lamps or artwork or wall pieces or couches are merely individual pieces, and it is the combination of these pieces that will make the room work. Tropical Decorating Tips and Ideas

For most of you reading this there’s nothing better than the thought of somewhere sunny and warm. Someplace where people would plan to retire to in the sun. This is the same type of place you’d like to go on holidays too and just enjoy the overall feeling of wellness that a sunny climate can give you. So why not have that experience early and put the feel of a sunny climate right into your own home, so you can be in the tropics every single day?

To make a start at creating your own desert island experience at home you’ll need to look for colors that are both bright and relaxing whilst still conveying the tropical theme. “Cold” colors are to be avoided at all costs. Why not start with white and pale creams to set the mood. Then after establishing this basic tone for the room you can add pale shades of blue and green to really flesh out the color scheme in the room.

With the floor, there are two main options; tiling and wooden flooring. Tiles generally look best, but hardwood covered with a suitable rug will also look great, and will also protect your new wooded floor. To give your room the feel of a beach, you could have a sisal rug in the room, although the furniture will be more important than what you put on the floor in the long run.

Next up for redecoration are the windows of the room. You can really start to have fun here. Sheer curtains can be used easily to cover up the windows in a bedroom without cutting off all the light when drawn back, and bamboo blinds will also look great if you decide to go down that route.

Dark wood and rattan furniture go really well with the tropical style, and if they have brightly colored throws they look even better. Once you have completed all of this, from the paint to furniture, you can put some tropical accessories in the room also, such as bold colored cushions, tropical posters, and finally; a fish tank with tropical fish will fit in brilliantly.

It is easier to find, for example, a decorative plate with a pretty design than to find a decorative plate with a picture of a rose on it. The idea of having a themed bedroom which includes matching furniture, walls, linen etc should not just be limited to a child’s bedroom but it can also be done to an adult room as well. In this article we will look at some bedroom decorating themes which you may wish to consider when redecorating the bedrooms in your own home.

The best thing about decorating and interior design is that it gives you a great chance to not only exercise your creativity but express your personality and that of the person whose room your are decorating on it.

Many children nowadays love to have a room that is themed and the most popular themes around are:-

As for an adult bedroom there is no reason why it should not be theme in the same way as you would with a child’s. Although most adults do prefer a much more subtle approach. Generally adult bedroom themes to be more general or abstract rather than specifically based around a certain theme.

Creative Decorating Ideas Using Old Windows

A Room With A View

Have you ever wished you had a great view right outside your bedroom window but all you see when you wake up in the morning is the wall of the next-door neighbor’s house? Well then follow these easy steps to create your own window with a great view.

What You Will Need for This Decorating Project:

1. An old window preferably with the glass still intact. You can find these at flea markets or salvage yards.

2. Poster or picture with a pretty view large enough to put behind the window.

3. 2 mug hooks

4. 1 nail

5. Wire

6. 10 thumbtacks

7. Hammer

If you want to paint the window, do this before moving on to the first step. You should consider though that sometimes the weathered, antique look adds a lot of charm.

How to Get This Look:

- Put the window on the floor and put the poster or picture on it so that the front is facing down.

- Use the thumbtacks to attach the picture or poster to the window.

- Make sure the picture is right side up.

- Lean the window against the wall so that you are looking at the back.

- Put the 2 mug hooks on the back of your window in the top corners.

- Make sure the opening for the mug hooks is facing down.

- Use the wire to create a “hanger” for the window. Secure the two ends of the wire on the mug hooks. Make sure there is a lot of excess wire so that when you hang the window the wire creates a triangle with 4-inch sides.

- Hammer the nail into the wall where you want your window.

- You can now add window treatments to it just as you would a normal window or wrap silk flower garlands around the wire.

Old windows can be used in a variety of ways. Here are just a few more creative ideas for the old window and a plain wall.

Decoupage pressed flowers on the different panes of glass. Try using whole flowers or just petals for an interesting country garden look.

Decoupage postcards from around the world into the panes or pictures of a favorite city, like Paris.

Paint the frame to match your child’s room. Attach clothespins (also painted in a coordinated color) all around the outside of the window. As you child grows attach school pictures to the panes and let them use the clothespins to showcase their drawings, report cards and other mementos. When the child graduates you have a ready-made decoration.

Make etched glass designs in the panes or make faux stained glass out of the windowpanes. Your local craft store should have everything you need to do this, from instructions to materials.

Use the window to create a fun decorative piece in the kitchen. Get a shelf the same width as the window and paint it the same color. Put the shelf on the wall just above the window so they look like one piece. Put mug hooks evenly spaced along the bottom of the window frame and use them to hold cute mugs, wire whisks, ladles, potholders or other items. Put recipe books along with a few decorative items that match your kitchen on the shelf, such as a vase of flowers, decorative plates or a nice clock.
